Location

The conference will be held at Ironmongers' Hall Shaftesbury Place, Barbican, London EC2Y 8AA on 25-26 November 2004.

Ironmongers Hall is just to the left of the Museum of London on the roundabout linking London Wall (a road running along part of the ancient city wall) and Aldersgate Street (one of the main gates out of the old city). It is set back a little from the street, but is an old building and easy to recognize among its more modern surroundings.

Ironmongers Hall is best reached by London Underground trains to:

  • Barbican on the Hammersmith & City Line, Circle Line and Metropolitan Line. Turn right out of Barbican station and walk a short distance along Aldersgate Street. Ironmongers Hall is on your left.
  • St Paul's on the Central Line. Cross the road outside the station and walk up St. Martin's Le Grand. This becomes Aldersgate Street after a short time. Ironmongers Hall is by the large roundabout.
  • Moorgate on the Northern Line (Bank branch), Hammersmith & City Line, Circle Line and Metropolitan Line. Moorgate is slightly further away and its position makes it more difficult to find Ironmongers Hall. It is best to follow signs for the Museum of London and/or Ironmongers Hall.

If travelling to London by train, all major stations have good connections to the Underground system. Change for one of the stations mentioned above.

Thameslink train services are not stopping at Barbican or Moorgate at present. Probably the simplest route if you want to use Thameslink is to change at Farringdon to London Underground trains for Barbican (1 stop) and follow the directions above from Barbican. Also, Thameslink currently require you to change at St. Pancras due to engineering work.

Transport For London has links to all major forms of transport in London. The Journey Planner can be very useful.

If you are stuck, you can get a black cab (taxi) to the conference, but expect this to quite expensive.

If flying into London on the day of the conference, low cost flights to Stansted airport are convenient, as you can get a Stansted Express train directly to Liverpool Street station. This takes around 1 hour and will deposit you a few minutes walk from the conference. From the station's main entrance, turn right onto Bishopsgate, then right again along London Wall.

The main airlines flying into Stansted are EasyJet, RyanAir and KLM.

If your hotel is in the area we recommend (Bloomsbury), find the nearest London Underground station to your hotel. Holborn (to St. Paul's), Euston Square (to Barbican) and Russell Square (to Holborn then St. Paul's) are good choices but it is not difficult to reach the conference from any station in this area.

London Hotels has a list of hotels around Bloomsbury and Russell Square. There is a wide choice of hotels in this area.
